Fun Things to Do for the 4th of July in Orange County

There’s nothing quite like the 4th of July in Orange County. Between neighborhood bike parades, beach-town traditions, fireworks, barbecues, and local community events, it’s one of those weekends that really shows off why people love living here.

Whether you’re staying close to home in Costa Mesa, heading to the beach, or looking for something family-friendly to do around OC, here are a few fun ways to celebrate the 4th of July in Orange County this year.

Mesa Verde 4th of July Parade

One of my favorite local traditions is the Mesa Verde 4th of July Parade. It’s exactly what makes Costa Mesa feel so special — kids on decorated bikes, golf carts, neighbors waving flags, and everyone out enjoying the morning together.

Mesa Verde has always had such a strong neighborhood feel, and events like this are a huge reason why. It’s simple, fun, local, and very Costa Mesa. Whether you live in the Inner Loop, State Streets, Lower Birds, Upper Birds, or nearby, it’s such a sweet way to kick off the holiday.

Costa Mesa Independence Day Celebration at the OC Fairgrounds

Costa Mesa is also hosting its Independence Day Community Celebration at the OC Fair & Event Center on Friday, July 3, 2026. The event includes food and drinks available for purchase, free admission and parking, and fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Gates open at 4 p.m., with the event running from 5–11 p.m.

This is a great option if you want fireworks without having to drive too far from home. Bring a picnic, lawn chairs, and a blanket, and make a night of it.

Huntington Beach 4th of July Parade + Surf City 5K

If you’re up for a bigger celebration, Huntington Beach is always one of the most iconic places to be on the 4th of July. The Surf City Run 5K starts the morning along Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway, followed by the Huntington Beach 4th of July Parade at 10 a.m.

The Huntington Beach celebration also includes festivities from July 3–5, with fireworks over the ocean on July 4 at 9 p.m.  It’s definitely a busier option, but if you love the energy of a beach-town 4th of July, HB is hard to beat.

Buy Fireworks from Local Booths and Support Schools

If you’re celebrating at home in Costa Mesa, buying fireworks from local booths is a great way to support schools, youth sports, and local nonprofit groups. Costa Mesa permits Safe & Sane fireworks booths through approved organizations, and the city’s posted list has included groups like Costa Mesa High School Boosters, Estancia High School Boosters, youth sports programs, Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa, Vanguard University, and more.

Costa Mesa High School Baseball is also hosting a TNT Fireworks stand fundraiser at the OC Fair & Event Center, Lot E, from June 30 through July 4.

Just make sure you’re purchasing legal “Safe & Sane” fireworks from permitted booths and following Costa Mesa’s rules. It’s a fun way to celebrate while also putting money back into the community.

Host a Neighborhood BBQ

Sometimes the best 4th of July plan is the simplest one: invite a few neighbors over, grill something easy, let the kids run around, and enjoy being outside.

Costa Mesa neighborhoods like Mesa Verde, College Park, Mesa Del Mar, Eastside Costa Mesa, and the Freedom Track all have that laid-back summer feel that makes a backyard BBQ perfect for the holiday. Add some sidewalk chalk, decorated bikes, popsicles, and a few lawn games, and you really don’t need much else.

Watch Fireworks by the Beach

If you want to make a full day of it, head toward the coast. Huntington Beach is the big one, but Dana Point, Laguna Beach, and other coastal cities usually offer beautiful firework shows and beachside celebrations as well.

The key is to plan ahead. Parking fills up fast, traffic is heavy, and leaving right after fireworks can take a while. If you’re going with kids, bring snacks, sweatshirts, and patience.

Make It a Local Costa Mesa Day

If crowds aren’t your thing, you can still have a festive day close to home. Start with coffee at one of your favorite Costa Mesa spots, decorate bikes or a golf cart, stop by a local fireworks booth, barbecue with neighbors, and end the night with fireworks.

That’s honestly what I love most about the 4th in Costa Mesa. You don’t have to overplan it. The community is the event.
